We talk about maintenance tune-ups a lot here at Climate Masters, and for good reason! Tune-ups allow our professionals to fully inspect, clean, and adjust components within your HVAC system that need it. This helps those systems perform more effectively and efficiently. Ultimately, this saves you money as you have fewer repair needs and your air conditioner will even last longer. Who doesn’t want to save money on their air conditioning when they live somewhere like Florida? The good news is, it’s really easy to do so.
Of course, it’s one thing for us to tell you that you should schedule tune-ups, but it’s another story to explain why and to explain what actually happens during these tune-ups. Read on as we uncover the general steps we take when maintaining your air conditioner.
The Steps of AC Maintenance
Keep in mind, we aren’t sharing these steps so you can try to conduct maintenance on your own. Doing so could do more harm than good to your air conditioner, and then you might find yourself giving us a call anyway to conduct emergency repairs. Also, this is just a very brief overview of what we do. We just want you to have an idea of what happens during this important service.
- We check the condenser coil and evaporator coil to make sure that neither is obstructed, and that they’re both clean and able to absorb and release heat.
- We check on your system’s refrigerant level to ensure it didn’t drop. If the refrigerant charge did drop, it means that you have a refrigerant leak. The leak must be accurately located and repaired by our professionals.
- We check on the electrical connections within the system, looking for things like frayed wiring and tightening connections where needed.
- We clean out the condensate drain and condensate pan so that the moisture from the evaporator coil doesn’t overflow them.
- We clean and lubricate the fan and the compressor motors to avoid mechanical stress that can lead to those motors burning out.
- We check and recalibrate the thermostat if needed, to ensure that it’s correctly reading the temperature.
- We replace or clean the air filter.
Now, for this last bullet point–replacing the air filter–it’s important to know that this is a small maintenance task that you can, and should, do on your own.
Every 1-3 months, you should change out your clogged air filter so that airflow isn’t restricted. This helps your air conditioner work more efficiently and prevents problems like ice on the evaporator coil, compressor damage, and more.
The Importance of Professional Maintenance
As we said above, it’s important to trust the pros for your air conditioning maintenance. By doing so, you can improve the efficiency of your HVAC systems, lower repair needs by as much as 85%, and improve your air conditioner’s lifespan. When well maintained, an AC system can last about 10-15 years. Without maintenance, that lifespan can be cut in half.
