Do you want your AC to take care of you this summer? You’ve got to take care of your AC!
However, the signs that your cooling system is struggling and need that care aren’t always obvious. You have to know what to keep an eye out for. Check out some of the most common signs here so you’re prepared to take care of your AC this summer.
1. Your Unit Is Short-Cycling
Do you notice your AC unit kicking on and off more frequently than usual? This is what is known as short-cycling. The unit is running in incomplete cycles, which is both horribly inefficient energy-wise and also putting a tremendous strain on your AC unit.
Because it doesn’t sound out of the ordinary, it isn’t always easy to notice short-cycling. As soon as you do notice it, call a technician — unless you like the idea of buying a whole new system when this one gives out.
2. Your Unit Is On More Than Normal
Another problem might be that your system just doesn’t shut off. It runs for long periods, even when it isn’t unusually hot outside.
This is an indication of low cooling power. Your system is running inefficiently and working overtime, yet not cooling your house as it should. Again, call a technician ASAP before the unit burns itself out.
3. You Hear Strange Noises When the AC Is On
Things that go bump in the night might not just be in your kid’s imagination. Perhaps they are hearing squealing, grinding, or scraping when the AC unit is on. After all, it’s easier to notice these noises at night when the house is quiet.
Noises like this usually indicate a loose belt or some other internal component in the AC unit’s motor. In general, it can be fixed easily. However, if the problem is ignored the loose component could eventually come off completely and may damage other parts of the unit.
4. Your Energy Bills Are Going Up
Yes, prices are rising all over the place, but a struggling AC unit could be pushing up your energy bills even higher. An inefficient machine will work harder, stay on longer, and use more energy to do the same job.
5. Humidity Craziness
Does the air in your home feel bone-dry? Or perhaps you have the opposite problem and the extra humidity in the air is causing condensation on the windows and on other objects in your home.
Either issue can cause problems for your home or your health and it’s best to get your AC unit working properly as soon as possible.
