Most people don’t spend a whole lot of time sitting around and thinking about their heating systems, even during the winter. You’re probably the same way. You’ve got bills, and taxes, and a million other things that are much higher on your priority list than optimizing your heating situation. Still, you’d be surprised at how much money you can save every month by just taking a couple of simple steps. Let’s take a look at 2 major things that you can do to save money on your heating bills during the winter.
Set Your Thermostat Properly
You can keep your home at summer temperatures during the winter, if you’re willing to spend the money to do it. Most people, though, probably don’t want to spend an exorbitant amount of money just to keep their house in the mid-70’s at all times. The easiest, and fastest, way to save money on your heating situation during the winter is to properly set your thermostat.
This means accepting a bit of discomfort sometimes, or perhaps just putting on a sweater inside instead of cranking the heat. Typically, we recommend that you set your thermostat for 68 degrees Fahrenheit in order to strike the proper balance between saving money and keeping your home relatively warm. You should also be careful not to adjust your thermostat frequently during the day. If the thermostat is forced to constantly adjust the temperature, even if it’s only by one or two degrees, it will be wasting more energy.
You should also consider either turning your thermostat off entirely, or setting it to maintain a lower temperature, during the night. You’re not awake to benefit from heating, so why waste the energy running the system at 3am?
Schedule Preventive Maintenance
This is best done before winter actually sets in, but preventive maintenance is a massive benefit even if it’s scheduled later. Heating issues, as you might already know, tend not to give off major warning symptoms when they first start to develop. Most homeowners don’t even recognize that their heating systems have a problem at all until later on. Once you do start to suspect that something is wrong with your system, it will probably be too late to prevent a lot of the damage.
The best way to actually deal with heating issues is to proactively pursue treating them, and that means scheduling maintenance. During a preventive maintenance appointment, your heating technician will be able to find and fix problems before they have the chance to develop far enough to cause damage. You’re going to have to schedule maintenance on a regular basis each year, but if you do, you will be able to save quite a bit of money on heating repairs.
