If you’ve had your heat pump for any length of time, you’re probably familiar with the kinds of noises that it makes. If at any point your heat pump starts to make unusual noises, it’s a sign that it may be in trouble of some kind. Let’s take a look at the various kinds of strange noises that you may hear coming from your heat pump, and the kinds of issues that they indicate.
Grinding
Your heat pump circulates air throughout your home using an air handler, which is essentially a large motor attached to a fan. The air handler motor is equipped with a series of oiled bearings, which help to reduce friction and let it run more smoothly. These bearings wear down over time, causing the friction on the air handler motor to increase and producing a loud grinding sound. If you hear this sound coming from your heat pump, call for repairs right away. Otherwise, the air handler motor could overheat and burn out.
Hissing
Hissing or gurgling coming from your heat pump indicates that air bubbles have formed in the refrigerant line. This is an indication of a leak in the line, which is draining refrigerant out of the system and creating open space. If the leak isn’t sealed, the heat pump will suffer a loss of output followed by an eventual full breakdown. If you notice hissing or gurgling sounds coming from your heat pump, or see fluid dripping from it, call for repairs as soon as possible. The faster the leak can be sealed, and the lost refrigerant replaced, the better off your system will be.
